Exploring Alternative Body Piercings

One of the things that people with piercings have in common is that we’re all going for a look that’s a bit different from the norm. Whether it’s just accenting our favorite feature or going for a look that makes people sit up and take notice, we’re all trying to accomplish a look that makes us feel on the outside like we do on the inside. And who doesn’t feel a little bit different on the inside? So today we’re going to talk about some hot and unusual piercings that are making the rounds.

Angel Fangs are paired vertical upper lip piercings, near the outer corners of the upper lip. (Basically, they are a pair of off-center jestrum piercings and yes, we wrote a blog about that!) The thing that makes these extra special is the jewelry choice. These require curved barbells. Once they’ve healed enough that the jewelry can be changed, the bottom ends are replaced with a cone end. This gives the effect of a pair of fangs! For a look that has a vampiric charm all its own, you can’t go wrong with these.

Another piercing that’s a bit different from the norm is the vertical industrial. These are cool because there are a few different options. The barbell runs vertically through the ear instead of running between the furthest points of the helix. It is often seen with the barbell running over the conch area, with the ball ends behind the ear. However, any place that will accommodate the piercing itself can be used for an industrial. So, you can have barbell sit at an angle, you may be able to have one or both ball ends at the front of the ear. A nifty variant of the multi-point piercing is the stitch piercing. These are frequently seen on the lobe but can be done anywhere you have enough tissue to support four piercings. The stitch is done with two stacked piercings, for a total of four. Once they are healed, they are connected diagonally with curved jewelry. This creates an “X” shape that resembles a single stitch.

Surface piercings remain super hot and a bit different from the rest of the pack. There seems to be a bit of debate over the appropriate jewelry for these, with some piercers no longer using surface bars. (Surface bars are those staple-shaped pieces with the ends peeking up at skin level) This is because surface piercings are a long-term temporary item, that will eventually reject but possibly not for a few years. They may reject much quicker though. The long bar in a surface bar means that potential scarring can be far worse. So, what to do? Dermals! Dermal implants are small bases that are implanted in the skin, using a needle or biopsy punch to create a tiny pocket in which they sit. The top end should be flush with the skin and offers a huge variety of options for style and theme. Any piercing normally done with a surface bar can be re-created by using paired dermals. This includes piercings like the anti-eyebrow (along the cheekbone) or the surface tragus (just forward of the ear).

Some more piercings that will definitely catch attention include a pair of forward-facing nostril piercings – otherwise known as a mantis piercing. These are nostril piercings located on the front of the nose tip. Or, if you prefer, there is the rhino piercing. This is a curved barbell that goes through the tip of the nose for a look that is rarely seen in the wild and makes a huge impact. And of course, high nostrils, which are further back and higher up than standard nostril piercings, are a definite attention grabber for their unique and creative placement!

Body piercing is an ever-evolving art and what may have seemed impossible a few years ago is already being seen on the streets today. If you are looking for a look that truly stands out from the crowd, these piercings are an excellent place to start. And keeping an eye on the piercing and body modification community is an excellent way to keep abreast of new piercings and fresh choices to make your look truly your own. Happy piercing!
