A: One should stretch their septum at the same pace they would stretch their lobes – no less than three months between stretches. Tapers should not be used; the skin should have naturally relaxed and be ready to easily accept the next size. One should not stretch more than one millimeter at a time, meaning that you’d need to find 7mm jewelry between 2 gauge and 0 gauge. A septril piercing requires a minimum of a 0 gauge septum piercing so you would have to figure a minimum of 3 months per size between the size of your current septum piercing and 0 gauge. Then another three months to let that heal and you should be able to go get the septril. Happy piercing!

 Q: Hey Kyra! So, I know that I can't take my jewelry out of my new 2 month old cartilage piercing... but can I leave the post in and switch out just the ball for a more decorative one? The post is internally threaded so would I be able to swap it out with one of the balls I already have? Thanks girl! -Melinda

A: This may or may not be possible. Due to the manufacturing process, the threading from one brand of jewelry may not quite synch up with another brand’s jewelry even if they both are internally threaded. You can try it, but it’s not guaranteed to be a success. What you may wish to do is go see your piercer and see if they can replace your current jewelry with a threadless piece. That way you can change the end easily, without removing the jewelry itself, and threadless ends are universal regardless of brand. Best of luck!
