The indigenous design on these glasses tells a story of Ngurra which means “home”.

The three red circles on the frame represent three WA communities, Balgo, Billiluna and Mulan.

The red line signifies the journey between the communities and a strong connection that the people have with the other communities and their land.

Hi my name is Francis Watson and this is my story.

I’m from a small remote community in the Tanami Desert Called Balgo Hills, which is south of Halls Creek in Western Australia

Painting has been around in my family for a very long time, my great grandmother and grandmother both painted when I was younger. Their love of art inspired me to start painting myself. I have memories of sitting with my grandmother after school watching her paint and teaching me.

Art holds a special place in Balgo and in many indigenous communities where it serves as a celebration of culture and a powerful form
of expression.

Being able to paint for SafeStyle and knowing that my artwork for SafeStyle will contribute to a good cause is something I am really proud to be a part of.

A SafeStyle goal of mine was to collaborate with an indigenous artist and showcase their artwork on a pair of SafeStyles. The end goal in mind was to generate donations from this pair to support indigenous foundations by giving back to the community.

When I was first introduced to artist, Francis Watson, I discovered that he was already a supporter of SafeStyle, as he was currently working as a heavy diesel mechanic and was excited about the possibilities of our collaboration.

After discussions with Lions Outback Vision, it was clear that their foundation perfectly aligned with our goal for these pairs.

The SafeStyle team were excited as we united to raise awareness, bridge gaps, and extend our support to Lions Outback Vision in their crucial mission to prevent blindness and vision loss among regional, remote, and Indigenous communities in Western Australia.

Our shared goal was to improve access to quality eye health care services and make a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.

I feel incredibly grateful to be in a position where SafeStyle can collaborate with Lions Outback Vision and with artists like Francis Watson, I honestly can’t wait to see this partnership grow.

I hope with our donations to Lions Outback Vision they can reach their goals and keep expanding the support and to someday help all indigenous communities across Australia.

Lions Outback Vision’s Mission is to prevent blindness and vision loss among regional, remote and Indigenous Western Australian’s by improving access to quality eye health care services.

94% of vision loss in Indigenous Australians is preventable or treatable, however,
an alarming 35% of Indigenous adults have never had an eye exam.

Each year, thousands of Australians suffer the debilitating effects of vision loss and blindness. There is a substantial gap in eye health between rural and remote Western Australians and their urban counterparts. People living in rural and remote Australia needlessly experience higher rates of blinding eye disease.

Lions Outback Vision aims to address the unique challenges of delivering quality specialist eye health care to regional, remote and Indigenous communities across our state. They currently provide specialist eye healthcare services throughout the Pilbara, Kimberley, Goldfields, Midwest and Great Southern regions of Western Australia.

"Our partners vital support enables us to continue our efforts to take equitable eye health services to regional and remote Western Australians. SafeStyles support will help Lions Outback Vision prevent blindness and provide better vision for all."

We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn and work.
