Free tours and coffee tasting, that sounds good, right? Shaka Tours has this as 1 of the stops on the drive we took today, and one of the things I definitely wanted to do while on the Big Island was visit a coffee farm. A personable and funny ,very knowledgeable, young man, Nate, led the tour we were on. We learned so much in an hour!
We tasted some of the authentic Kona coffees and I splurged on a bag to bring home.
Worth stopping by!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - 303502095Mar 23, 2024
Was in Kona, read about coffee farms and so we decided to come take a look. What we thought would be a so-so 30 minute tour was in fact a very interesting tour led by Nate.
Having been a coffee bean picker for two years, he was knowledgeable about the whole process! He was entertaining and he was experienced. I can see that he grew up in ranks.
We also got to taste fresh peppercorn, see fresh vanilla bean on the vine and see pineapple plant too.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 17, 2024
I was only in the Kona area for a couple days, so I knew I wanted to go on one coffee tour, but only had time to go on *one* coffee tour, so I looked around on Yelp to find one that was, first off, free, and that looked to be particularly quality. I definitely think I chose right - and I loved that I didn't even need to make a reservation or anything, just show up at one of the pre-arranged times that they schedule throughout the day. Tour was just under an hour, during which we learned all about the farm and about how coffee is grown and processed from start to finish, including, unlike the chocolate tour I went on the previous day, seeing all *manner* of quite cool coffee-processing machines, under active use. Saw all kinds of other cool trees growing all kinds of fruits, too, including giant banana bunches, giant avocado bunches, and while lychee wasn't in season (so we didn't see any actual lychees), the trees they grow on (I didn't actually even know lychee grew on trees). Also got to eat the freshest, tastiest green peppercorn, right off a vine. (They told us to eat one... I may have eaten a couple more when the guide wasn't looking. :D)
Subsequent to the tour (or if you can't make any of the times, or don't have an hour to spend here), they also offer a whole array of samples of their various coffees, also entirely complimentary. Most of their fancy hot coffees, admittedly, as mainly an espresso and cold brew drinker, were lost on me - though they did have a wonderful macadamia nut coffee that tasted by far the most like drinking actual macadamia nuts rather than macadamia nut "flavoring", that I've tried, as well as one iced coffee billed as being the "perfect" blend for iced coffee anywhere, which, you know, might well be true; it was extremely good iced coffee, unsurprisingly. (I'm mostly curious why they weren't selling any of their various other products they grow at the farm that we saw on the tour to consumers, though - I wasn't really in the market for coffee beans at that price, but I'd probably have bought some of that peppercorn if I could've! Dried to black pepper, or jarred and pickled straight off the vine like I tried it!)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 12, 20241 check-in
Free tour? Count me in! Our guide was informative and quirky. The tour itself was almost an hr long with a tour happening every 30 minutes. If you have kids make sure they are fed with lots of energy otherwise you may have them cranky and complainers. The place is beautiful- the guide discuses everything from how the coffee beans are harvested, roasted, and into our hands. They also sell white pineapple and black peppers from what I remember. The gift shop has a variety of coffees you can taste. A must visit if you're in the area.

What a great tour of the coffee farm! Greenwell farms offers free tours during the day and I really enjoyed all the information they provided. The property is really cool and it has many fruit trees and beautiful plants on the land. We visited when the oranges were fresh and were able to purchase one and it was amazing. We went home with a pound of their coffee, which had excellent taste. They offer different coffees to try at the end of the tour.
It was rainy when we went, and they let you use umbrellas as you go on the tour. The store and tasting area is an open air covered area. Parking is easy with many spots. You can sign up for your tour time online or in person when you arrive. The people working here are amazing and answered all of our questions.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

Honestly, I didn't know what to expect going to the coffee farm and tour. We have been to many tours all over the world and farm tours always seem to be lacking, such as the pineapple farm tour in Maui.
However, we struck GOLD on this tour.
-the tour is completely free and lasts an hour
-the tour guides are beyond knowledgeable
-the tour has lots of interactive elements such as chewing raw beans, pepper corn, feeling the drying coffee, and walking to pick beans.
-the tour guides are excited to pass on their knowledge.
We got Chai, a certified expert in coffee, she was absolutely fantastic. My husband, who dislikes coffee, got totally into the tour, and even bought coffee at the end from the shop.
Chai has a zest for life, and a zest for all things coffee. She knows almost everything about the process. And make sure you ask her lots of questions!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

If you're looking for something to do on the Kona side and you like to learn about Kona coffee, take the tour at Greenwell.
Beverage:
Lots of different flavors to try.
Tour:
We had Kewena (sp?) He was great as if we were on a Coffee-ology introduction course. We had fun learning about the process from the "cherry" form to dried bean. They provided umbrellas for sun protection. Warning- if you're a " sweet" person spray insect repellent. I got bit several times.
Accessibility:
There is handicap parking and you can get to the gift shop to sit and try coffee. But it is a farm on hills, so there's no paved parts on the tour.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1Business owner information

One of the best coffee tour on the island! I've been to many of the coffee tours on big island but Greenwell farm gives the best tour in terms of location and quality. You can't "pick" your guide as you show up and that determines what time of the tour you're goin to go, but I love Nate. He an amazing guide! We always bring our visiting friends to Greenwell Farm and they all love this tour. Great choices of coffee beans to take home to, and many kids of coffees you can taste here. So stop by here while you're in Kona!
