Full Power Magnetic Charging Card

I made a inexpensive magnetic charging expansion Card with some off the shelf parts and a 3D printed part I designed. It’s capable of delivering full power and full data transfer rate. Below are the parts a file I used.
The rest of the links are in the video since I can only post 2 links as a new user.

This looks awesome. The color matches perfectly from what I can see!

Thanks! I was pretty impressed with how the paint turned out on the first try.

I’ve found the extension on Amazon.ca, but still looking for an equivalent magnetic adapter. (Amazon.ca has the iSkey, but long delivery time, non-Prime, and I’m impatient.) If anyone finds an equivalent, let me know…

@Zachary_Priest Thanks for the kind words. Let me know how it works for you.

@Chris_Eden I found another that looks like it might work.

Thanks Sean! I also found this one:

and I’d bet based on the very similar pics that they’re all exactly the same manufacturer.

I have to get our library to 3d print it for me, so that’s in progress, and hopefully it all lines up (or I do a little extra filing).

So good to see this kind of ingenuity, thanks again!

Following up, Sean was kind enough to add a comment to his video with his print settings.

Largest flatest side down, 0.15 layer height, No supports, 6 layers on top.

@Sean_N Curious for your thoughts on my print. I generally do a thick raft which helps a ton with adhesion, though I suspect it isn’t working well with the ultra-thin base on this item. As you can see from the images, you can actually see through my base layer, which leads me to believe at least part of those layers got merged into the raft.

Does everything else look as intended?

Adding my shell and raft settings for reference.

Update: aesthetics aside, it’s working like a charm. Thanks for the fantastic design!

You will have to print it directly on the bed. I don’t think you can achive the same result with a raft. Make sure you Nozzle height offset is very accurate. If you are still struggling with it I can send you one of mine.

I don’t see the links for the parts in either the original post or the video. I got the stl ok. What am I missing?
I see the video and below it “Expansion Card File” and below that the google drive Expansion Card.STL link.
Below the likes and link icon, a link to [Card Idea] Magnetic Connector, which doesn’t have anything to add.

Awesome work dude! I was thinking of a way of retrofitting the surface connect port into a expansion card as it seems like the dimensions would work but this seems better.

Thanks. I already got the lesson, just couldn’t find a rod to fish with!

Apparently these magnetic USB-C things aren’t so great:

@RandomUser I would go for a prusa 3D printer. they are all great. Otherwise have heard good things about creality.

@mirrorslie I realize it’s not a name brand piece but I’m willing to take the risk. I have been pretty reckless with mine so far without any trouble. Was there any thing in the reddit thread that was a real concern?

From my own, uneducated position in these matters, it looked like a lot of by-the-book technical nitpicking, with some people chiming in on the thread saying as much later. Stats would help, as would some scenarios to avoid to mitigate issues.

Hopefully karma doesn’t visit my Framework. I’m picking up my $2.31 3d print at the library this morning, and getting the other parts today via Amazon…
